What are Hex Perks in Dead by Daylight?

Perks are one of the coolest aspects to dead by daylight because they can completely alter and change the course of the game. they are fascinating because it really makes the game play loop more dynamic. No two games are the same. The combination of the different killers and their abilities become altered with the perks it makes every game feel unique and no two games are the same.

One of these perk types is a hex perk. These are very circumstantial perks that offer high rewards but also offer great risks as there exists the potential that your perk can be removed from the rest of the trial. However what I like most about the hex perks and their totems is it adds yet another layer of depth and complexity to the game and that is what makes it like no other.

However it begs the question, what exactly are hex totems and perks?

What is a hex perk

A hex perk acts like a regular perk, however its existence is tied to a practical item in the trial. These items are called hex totems. They look like a pile of bones that glow as if they are on fire. Each pile of these bones represents one hex perk that is active. Hex perks only exist as long as that totem remains alive somewhere on the map.

However there is a counter to these perks because these totems are able to be cleansed. This means that if a survivor comes across this totem they can spend 11 seconds in order to cleanse it and it will be destroyed for the rest of the match. And when your hex totem is no longer standing the perk that is connected to that totem is no longer active and can no longer be used for the rest of the trial.

This introduces a great risk and reward system into the gameplay. Because the hex perks are phenomenal and offer great oppourtunities for the killer, they can automatically regress generators, they can cause the exposed status effect etc. However it also comes with great risk. because once that hex totem is no longer standing neither is your perk. And perks are one of the core aspects to how you can win a game. And if you have no perks due to your hex totems being cleansed. You have put yourself in a very bad situation.

Examples of some Hex perks

Devour Hope

This is one of the most common hex perks and can obliterate a team of survivors if they are not careful and do not act quickly enough. Devour hope involves a series of five tokens. Each time you hook a survivor and a team mate picks them up from a certain distance, you gain a token. And for each token their day gets a little bit worse. At 2 tokens you gain a speed boost for ten seconds. At 3 tokens all survivors have the exposed status effect. And at 5 tokens you are able to kill all survivors when downed by your own hand. It is a phenomenal perk that will destroy any survivors that are foolish enough to leave it standing.

Ruin
Ruin is probably one of the best hex perks out there because it acts so passively. You do not have to kick generators in order to regress them and add generator pressure. Instead, as long as they are not working on the generator, the gen will regress passively. This perk will remain active all the way until the hex totem is cleansed by the survivors. When this occurs the generators will no longer passively regress.

No One Escapes Death

No one escapes death or more commonly referred to as "noed" Is one of the most controversial perks in the entire game. The way it works is once all the generators are completed and the exit gates are able to be opened, no one escapes death activates and all remaining survivors are given the exposed status effect and they are now able to be instantly downed.

The reason why it is so controversial is because it rewards killers for failing to prevent generator repairs. it does not matter if the survivors evaded the killer the entire match and successfully completed all of the generators, if the killer has no one escapes death than one lucky hit and it tilts the entire game in the favor of the killer. Especially because the survivors will want to rescue their fallen team mate which also puts them at risk due to them also being exposed.

Conclusion

In conclusion hex perks and their respective totems add another mechanic to the game that suvivors have to be constantly aware of. This mechanic adds a whole new layer of complexity to the game and makes it much more in depth and detailed. It is mechanics like hex perks that can change the course of a trial. And it is for that reason why Dead By Daylight is such an innovative game.
