The Best Ship Type in Sea of Thieves
What is the Best Ship Type in Sea of Thieves?
Sea of Thieves is a pirate adventure game that takes place in an open world. This means that everyone you come across in the world (besides the obvious few npcs) are real players with mean intentions. However in order to traverse this daunting world, you will need a trusty ship by your side. Thankfully the game provides you with three different ship types that you can choose from. Each ship type has its benefits and its downsides. And it also represents the amount of people in their crew.
However when you compare the three ship types the very understandable question comes to mind? Which of the three ship types is the best on the seas? So today we will be comparing the three ship types, their speed, their fire power, the psychology behind the ship type, and how it ranks compared to the other ship types. And we will determine which one is the best.
The Sloop
The sloop is a humble vessel. It only hoists one sail, and one cannon on each side. Its fire power is limited and so is its sailing capabilities. However it does have some advantages. It is a much smaller vessel which means it is easier to handle. Most of the crucial utilities such as the map, anchor, and all the resources you need are very readily accessible. They are not located two decks below, they are at the ready which makes repairs and cannoning very simplified and easy. Another benefit of the sloop is how slowly it takes on water and sinks. With only one below water deck there are only so many holes that can be made, which makes water coming in very slow. Which means although you can be getting pelted by a galleon, your shots are doing more damage to their ship than theirs are doing to yours. Because their ship is much larger, takes on water faster, and is harder to maintain and repair.
Also another thing to consider with the sloop is its maneuverability, because it only has one sail, it is very easy to maneuver the ship which makes you hard to hit. Also there is some psychology behind it. You are the smallest ship type out there, you have one cannon and the most people you can have on your ship is two. You are the under dog and people will underestimate you. If you are a skillful player you are able to use this to your advantage.
Another factor to keep in mind is the fact that every ship type has a specific sailing strategy that they are advantageous in. For the sloops case, the sloop is the fastest ship when sailing directly against the wind. If you are being chased by a ship, sail directly against the wind and unless they are another sloop they will not be able to catch up with you, unless the wind changes of course. However keep in mind every ship type has an advantage.
Brigantine
The brigantine is the most recent ship type to enter the sea of thieves. As it only entered the game during the anniversary update. This is contrary to the other two ship types as they were both available to players at the launch of the game. The brig is probably the most versatile ship out of the three. It combines the simplicity of the sloop as well as the fire power of the galleon and is the perfect ship for a three man crew.
It has only two decks. The upper deck where the cannons, anchor, and wheel are. And then everything else is below deck. Here you will find all the barrels, the ammo crate as well as the map. One of the downsides to the brig is the fact that it is much easier to sink. Because it only has one deck it can fill up very quickly. The sloop has a lower deck, a middle deck and the main deck which allow it to take much more water compared to the brig.
Another thing to consider with the brig is the fact that it has two sails, which does indeed make it faster in most scenarios but makes it difficult to maintain with only three crew members. However with great communication and team work, the brig can be very agile and maneuverable.
The brig also has its own specific environment where it is advantageous. When there is a cross wind, perpendicular to the sails, the brig is the fastest ship. Keep this in mind while on the seas. In conclusion the brig has great maneuverability, fire power, speed, and manageability. Making it a very versatile ship perfect for any situation.
Galleon
The galleon has to be the staple of the sea of thieves game. It is the most recognized ship type on the seas and is a ship of death for smaller poorly coordinated ships of the likes of a sloop and brig. Although when matched against a well coordinated crew, the galleon can be a sitting duck in the water and will pay the price for it.
the galleon has the most firepower out of the three ship types, with a whopping four cannons on each side of the ship. However because of its size it makes it very difficult to manage. It has three decks. One of these decks serves no purpose and is located below the waterline. Which means if you get hit there you will constantly take water and it will be difficult to repair. And on a ship that requires 4 people to manage, when one of your crew mates is occupied repairing that leaves your ship very difficult to maneuver.
Another one of the downsides of using a galleon is how slow it can be. Such a large ship can be slow I’m most scenarios. However similar to the previous two ship types it also has conditions where it can be the fastest ship. When The wind is fully in your sails, no angle. This is called dead wind and in this, the galleon is the fastest ship.
Another thing to remember with the galleon is the psychological factors behind the ship. Most crews will only use a galleon if they bye enough crew mates in order to manage it. And the galleon was designed for a crew of four people. This means that when ever you come across a galleon you can make the safe assumption that you will be fighting off four people. This is daunting if you have a smaller crew. Especially so if you are a sloop. The sheer fire power of four cannons is enough to overwhelm any crew. However does the large difficult to maneuver and resource costly ship make it worth it?
Conclusion
in conclusion out of the three different ships the brigantine is most definitely the best ship type. This is because it has the best of both worlds. It possesses the simplicity and easy to use nature of a sloop as well as the maneuverability that it utalizes and it also has the speed and firepower potential that make a galleon so terrifying. But it lacks the drawbacks that make a sloop or galleon not worth it. The galleon has three decks which make it hard to manage this is something the brig avoids. And the sloop has only one cannon and one sail making it difficult to fire rapidly. This is something the brig also avoids. Because of its versatility and lack of downsides the brig is the best ship type in the game
